The application parameters and the respective advantages and disadvantages of each format for learning and knowledge sharing are reviewed and discussed. It is argued that the combination of these four visualization types can play to the strength of each one. The article then provides real-life examples from such a use in undergraduate and graduate university teaching. The results provide first indications that the different visualization formats can be used in complementary ways to enhance motivation, attention, understanding and recall. The implications for a complementary use of these visualization formats in class room and meeting contexts are discussed and a future research agenda in this domain is articulated. Multimodal Concept Mapping in teaching and learning: a MirandaNet Fellowship project
This paper outlines an eighteen-month project undertaken by the MirandaNet Fellowship from 2006 – 7 to explore the ways in which multimodal concept mapping and ICT could enhance teaching and learning. Visual thinking and learning tools such as Mind Mapping and Concept Mapping have long been used in classrooms. They support (and in many cases underpin) visual learning. Findings from all of the p...
متن کاملKnowledge Visualization
Making knowledge visible so that it can be better accessed, discussed, valued, or generally managed is a longstanding objective in knowledge management (see Sparrow, 1998). Knowledge maps, knowledge cartographies, or knowledge landscapes are often heard terms that are nevertheless rarely defined, described, or demonstrated. In this article, we review the state of the art in the area of knowledg...

Conceptual maps have been used in many areas as a means of capturing and representing knowledge. Several authors have explored the use of visual tools to enhance the learning process. Thinking maps as well as frame games use visual patterns of relationships (learners thinking processes) to structure knowledge. Based on their graphical structure it is possible to recognize the thinking process(e...
متن کاملThe Use of Digital Concept Maps as Cognitive Tools for Managing Knowledge and Knowledge Resources
Advanced computer-based concept-mapping tools are suggested to have the potential to foster spatial learning strategies and processes of individual knowledge management like the acquisition, organization, representation, (self-) evaluation, communication, localization and utilization of knowledge. In addition, they have the potential to represent not only conceptual knowledge, but also content ...
متن کاملMyocardial perfusion SPECT: Perfusion quantification
Different software tools for quantification of myocardial perfusion SPECT (MPS) studies are routinely used. Several perfusion parameters can be computed automatically. Interpretation of the MPS should start with visual inspection of the rotating planar images, visual analysis of reconstructed SPECT slices and then quantitative analysis to confirm the visual impression. Quantification should be...
